Join us on October 29 for our second annual Knowledge Fair & Expo at CNM’s Workforce Training Center in Albuquerque. You’ll have the opportunity to meet the leaders of established and start-up bioscience companies, suppliers, service providers, angel investors and economic development professionals that will discuss state and local incentives. Exhibitors and attendees alike will connect with new customers, find new collaborators and partners, meet life science colleagues and discover companies making cutting edge discoveries.


Enjoy keynotes and panel discussions from the industry’s leading experts and innovators, including Stuart Rose, founder of the BioScience Center and FatPipe and an investor in many of the state’s most promising bioscience and technology startups, Elizabeth (Lisa) Kuuttila, CEO and Chief Economic Development Officer, STC-UNM, John Chavez, President of the New Mexico Angels, CEO of Exovita Biosciences and Managing Director of Phase One Ventures, and Waneta Tuttle, President and CEO of Southwest Medical Ventures and one of the founders of Tramway Venture Partners. These key players wiil review past industry accomplishments and preview the transformative potential of the state’s biotech ecosystem. 

Another panel will focus on ways NM can and must develop the necessary talent for its future bioscience and tech workforce. Sarah Boisvert, who co-founded MIT’s Fab Lab Hub, and is the author of The New Collar Workforce will serve as moderator. After leaving Cambridge for Santa Fe two years ago, she has established Fab Lab Hubs at the Santa Fe Business Incubator and Santa Fe Community College. Her book provides an excellent road map to the future of manufacturing, telling readers that new collar jobs will bridge blue collar and the engineering workforce — digital fabrication, laser machining, 3D printing are where the biggest opportunities lie for today’s graduates. She will be joined by NM’s former Secretary of Labor, Celina Bussey, who recently joined Central New Mexico Community College as its Chief Workforce Development Officer. In addition, the panel will include Luke Spangenburg, Director of Santa Fe Community College’s Innovation Center and Biofuels Center of Excellence as well as a yet to be confirmed bioscience executive that’s hiring today’s future talent. 

Keynote speakers include Dr. Richard Sayre  Chief Research Scientist, Pebble Labs. His topic: “Unlocking Nature’s Code to Meet Mankind’s Biggest Challenges for a Healthier Planet.”

Luncheon Keynote - Mara G. Aspinall, BlueStone Venture Partners.

Presentation - “Data is the New Black: How the Fourth Industrial Revolution is Changing Healthcare.” 

We are at the cusp of the Fourth Industrial Revolution when tech is invisibly buried in every aspect of our lives.  Healthcare is being radically changed by this, with far more to come.  How do we reap the benefits and conquer the challenges?  Where are we now? Where will the changes be the fastest?  Which disruptions that open new opportunities?  Who will be the winners and losers?  How will data be used and priced?  What technologies will reign supreme? Mara Aspinall is Co-Founder and Managing Director, BlueStone Venture Partners. BlueStone Ventures is a firm investing in life sciences technology and innovation companies based in the US southwest  The firm was recently selected by the state of New Mexico for a $3 million match commitment for emerging early stage companies

Mara is also CEO of the Health Catalysts Group, an investment and advisory firm dedicated to the growth of health information technology and diagnostics firms, publishing the popular Health Catalysts Diagnostics Year in Review. She is a member of the Board of Directors of Abcam plc (ABC), Allscripts (MDRX), Orasure (OSUR), 3Scan, Blue Cross Blue Shield Arizona and Castle Biosciences.

As President and CEO of Ventana Medical Systems, a billion-dollar division of The Roche Group, Mara worked alongside her world-class team to lead the company to new financial success, more than two dozen major instrument and assay launches and global leadership in companion diagnostics. Previously, she served as President of Genzyme Genetics and Genzyme Pharmaceuticals. Genzyme Genetics grew into the country’s leading diagnostic testing company and sold to LabCorp for $1 billion. Aspinall also founded On-Q-ity, a diagnostic company dedicated to circulating tumor cells. Mara was named Arizona Biosciences Leader of the Year by the Arizona Biotechnology Association and one of “100 Most Inspiring People in Life Sciences” by PharmaVOICE magazine.


EY will present its findings and industry analysis on biotechnology financing, deal making and the state of the industry. Continued public scrutiny of drug pricing, heightened expectations of payers regarding a drug’s value and regulatory and policy risks all have significant impact on investor sentiment on the sector, its growth prospects and company evaluation  EY’s speaker will evaluate trends in deal-making in the context of the rising expectations of the investors, payers and other stakeholders. These expectations, in turn, require companies to access new capabilities and adjust development and commercial strategies.

At this year’s event, we’ll be introducing a new program, Presenting Partners. Representatives from more than a dozen organizations and non-profits, including NM Economic Development Department, STC-UNM, NM MEP, Bluestone Venture Partners, Axcess Financial Group, NM’s International Trade Office, LANL, Sandia and AFRL Labs, SBA, Arrowhead Center, Santa Fe Business Incubator, BIO Business Solutions, and others will give short summaries of their mission in addition to presenting ways they can help bioscience, tech and healthcare startups with technical assistance, funding or research expertise. They will staff exhibit tables in the Expo area and be able to answer your questions.
